Day 4: Analyze a Top Blog in Your Niche of 31 Day Build Better Blog
Sometimes your niche is looking for inspiration in how others have done it. Using my Day 4 from the 31 Days to a Better Blog to tell a story from my storytelling class in 2008. Analyze and followup I have done to go back through my notes and focus on a young lady and other teenagers who are already blogging. Why put it here in Web Design School? Trend for customers is wanting a WordPress blog or website so they can update it. They want to reach out to their customers and be more social. The static webpage is fine for some aspects of their business.
Several years ago in Storytelling class, Don Merritt the instructor used many of the social media tools as vehicle for telling a story. One day he came in to talk about blogging. Using a blog as a vehicle for telling stories. Don stated
I’d also like you all to check out Nicole’s blog, sodevious.net. She’s 13 and making a killing off of her blog. What kind of storytelling would you consider her work, if any kind at all? There is also some social networking involved – check out the “affies”, which are affiliated blogs.
Blogs were also a vehicle for income. He had an example of a young 13 year old blogging. Selling ad space on her site because she had so much traffic. She was pulling in a monthly income. No, I don’t remember if Don knew the figures.
Well that site has grown up as well as the young lady Nicole into a site for teenagers where she helps them learn the craft and plans her own future in Digital Media. Nicole found her passion and a niche. An example of a recent guest post on her site is about Breaking into Web Design for beginners. Check it out.
Chloe Spencer from New Zealand, another teen, has a site on Neopets Fanatic where others are writing stories about her earning money with Google ads versus babysitting. She has on average in 2006 6000 page views earning about $15 day. Her story and earnings grew from there. She tells her journey.
Chloe spoke at BlogHer about doing Search Engine Optimization and Google AdSense on the Professional Blogging Panel at the 2007 BlogHer conference in July in Chicago. She gives advice on avoiding scams and how to play to get the most.
Dailyblogtips had an article on teens who are earning at least $900 a month with blogging and online enterprises. There are many out there offering ebooks and advice on Social Media Marketing. Some are Network Ponzi type schemes and others are really reaching down to pick others up into the business. Find the right match and passion for you or turn your teen onto working online while still in High School too. Maybe compete and grow together.
Find those who have been successful, who are openly sharing online. Stand on their shoulders with their knowledge to reach up while at the same time reaching down and bringing someone along with you. Remember you are Awesome!
